WHY COOLING IS IMPORTANT FOR YOUR HORSE
The revolution in horse cooling technology comes from Austria – emcools Active.Pads with HypoCarbon® technology. It is a unique new concept, nominated for an innovation award at the 2019 EQUITANA trade show. As such emcools Active.Pads can hardly be compared to conventional cooling products.
The emcools HypoCarbon® cooling technology has been successfully used in human medicine for more than a decade and offers a highly efficient cooling capability.
It is characterised by its excellent heat exchange capacity. Moreover it is environmentally friendly and non-toxic, and ensures the constant reduction of body or tissue temperature.
Thus, the emcools HypoCarbon® cooling technology is perfectly predestined for cryotherapy in horses.
USE OF EMCOOLS COOLING PADS FOR CRYOTHERAPY
Cryotherapy (or cold therapy) is the specific use of cold to achieve a therapeutic effect (pain therapy and anti-inflammatory action). The analgesic effect felt when cooling an injury or burn is explained by the contraction of the vessels in the tissue and the resulting reduction in blood flow. The cooling also reduces the metabolic processes and thus also inhibits inflammatory processes. Therefore, cryotherapy is effective in inflammatory diseases.
Regardless of whether you are treating a leg injury in an early (acute) or late stage, or just want to support overly-stressed horse legs to stay healthy or offer your horse a soothing spa treatment: cold therapy is wonderful for that. Still, this effective therapy method is under-used in equestrian sport, although it has been proven that cryotherapy in both human and horses provides very good treatment results. Especially if you use cryotherapy regularly, it is a simple and attractive way to keep the horse fresh, fit and healthy.
These applications cover the efficient emcools HypoCarbon® cryotherapy on your horse
- faster recovery of the „horse-athlete
- treatment of acute and older injuries such as tendon injuries, inflammation of the fetlock joint,…
- therapy for arthrosis, gallbladder, fever, …
- prevention for circulatory problems & heat stroke
- “Wellness-Chillout” for our equine partner
POST-EVENT COOLING FOR PREVENTION AND RECOVERY OF THE HORSE’S LEGS AFTER WORK
The most common use for emcools HypoCarbon® cooling is post-event (i.e. after shows, training, driving, longer rides such as trekking and endurance, …).
emcools Active.Pads with the HypoCarbon® technology can be used daily post-event to prevent inflammation, tendon injuries, joint inflammation, swelling or arthrosis. The recovery process – especially of tendon injuries – is usually very long and burdens the purse of the horse owner. Recovery also requires a lot of patience to run the month-long recovery program with an increasingly impatient horse. Regular use of emcools cooling boots after work will help you to prevent injuries.
For prevention and recovery, we recommend a cooling period of at least 30 minutes to about 1 – 2 hours. Depending on the temperature in the leg and the ambient temperature, a cooling time of up to approx. 4 hours is generally possible with the emcools cooling boots. After application, there is still a pleasant after-cooling effect.
The re-heating effect occurring after the post-cooling finally increases the blood circulation and helps the horse’s body to repair micro damage faster. The horse recovers faster after the workout and thus a better regeneration is guaranteed. In acute, severe inflammation the horse leg may at times not even feel cool. Nevertheless, the emcools Active.Pads with HypoCarbon® technology achieve a depth effect that is only visible on thermal images.
Also pre-event cooling is partly common in equine racing (before show). Depending on the start time, it makes sense to cool the horses in summer temperatures during the day and not only after workout. On hot days it is important to avoid circulatory problems or even a heat stroke with pre-cooling.
COOLING SMALLER COMMON INJURIES
The emcools cooling boots are essential in everyday horse life.
emcools Active.Pads with HypoCarbon® technology are versatile tools. Swollen legs for example are quickly caused by
- small scratches
- after transportation
- hot temperatures and extreme temperature changes
- circulatory problems of older horses
- days of rest
- caused by insect stitches
- weight gain of mares in last pregnancy months
emcools Active.Pads with HypoCarbon® technology even provide pain relief in the case of swelling in the area of the withers –for example caused by saddle pressure.
In this case, simply put the emcools cooling pad on the swollen area and fix it by using a blanket girth. Don’t use emcools Active.Pads on open wounds.
PREVENTION of HEAT STROKE & SPA FOR YOUR HORSE
Heatwave periods with temperatures of 30 °C (86°F) and above can quickly pose a critical risk to the health of your horse – not only during physical efforts. It is therefore especially important to cool the horses regularly at summer temperatures and not only after exercise & shows. Regular use of cooling helps to avoid circulation problems or even a heat stroke. The emcools cooling boots are an ideal cooling option for use in the stable, as a much more efficient cooling can be achieved compared with conventional cooling products.
We recommend a cooling period of at least 30 minutes to about 1 – 2 hours on both, hind legs and front legs. In order to achieve a constant & efficient cooling, the emcools cooling pads can be changed every hour in acute cases.
THERAPEUTIC COOLING AS SUPPORTIVE CRYO THERAPY
For highly effective treatment of tendon injuries, joint problems, swelling, edema, galls, heat stroke, fever, and much more, we recommend a cooling of at least 30 minutes to about 1 – 2 hours several times a day. Depending on the temperature in the leg and the ambient temperature, a cooling time of up to approx. 4 hours is generally possible with the emcools cooling boots.
Important note: emcools Active.Pads with HypoCarbon® technology are not classified as medical products. We strongly advise you to consult with your veterinarian for advice regarding the duration of therapeutic use of your emcools system, as it may be dependent on the injury. However, tell your veterinarian that thanks to its unique composition, emcools Active.Pads with HypoCarbon® technology can cool more efficiently than conventional refrigerated products. Therefore, if properly handled (see instructions for use), the emcools Active.Pads will not cause damage to the skin (freezing burn) as with conventional water and ice coolants. The emcools Active.Pads with HypoCarbon® technology should not be used on open wounds.
COOLING FOR FEVER TREATMENT
Antipyretic medicine promotes the return of the elevated thermostatic setpoint to the normal range. External / physical cooling methods, such as the use of the emcools cooling boots, additionally support the heat transfer through the skin by conduction.
We recommend cooling for at least 30 minutes to approx. 1 – 2 hours and use the cooling boots on the hind legs and, if possible, on the front legs, too. In order to achieve a constant & efficient cooling in acute cases, the emcools cooling pads should be exchanged every hour.
COOLING in case OF LAMINITIS
In case of acute laminitis, the hooves of the horse should be permanently cooled in the first 48 to 72 hours.
Experts like the Australian laminitis specialist Dr. Andrew van Eps also recommend cooling the horse’s legs as a supportive therapy. The emcools cooling boots are ideal for this additional treatment and have already proven themselves in practice in the treatment of laminitis patients.
We recommend a cooling of at least 30 minutes to about 1 – 2 hours. In order to optimize the cooling performance, the emcools cooling pads should even be changed every hour. Use cooling boots on the affected horse legs and, if possible, on all four legs.
COOLING AT THE SHOW
Actually, emcools cooling boots & emcools Active.Pads are doping-free. However, we advise you to use the cooling boots at shows compliant with the current FEI regulations or national regulations.
